Heinlein Family papers

Dates

  • 1870 - 1997

Scope and Contents

The Heinlein Family papers consist of three manuscript boxes of materials dating from 1870-1997.

Elizabeth O. Heinlein and her husband David M. Heinlein developed an appreciation for Japanese, Chinese, and Filipino art while working in Asia from 1936 to 1939. Many of the materials housed in the first box in this collection date to the 1930s and 1940s and relate to East Asian culture, including Japanese Tourist pamphlets and brochures, maps, and various personal writings and notes. Correspondence in the collection dates from the 1940s through the 1980s and primarily relates to David M. Heinlein's tenure at Rutgers Preparatory School, where he began teaching in 1942 before becoming Headmaster in 1953. Other correspondence comes from David A (son of Elizabeth and David M.) on his dealings with the city of Fukui in securing his job to teach there.

The second and third boxes in the collection primarily consists of research and notes on (and a draft of) a book about Japan being written by David A., as well as binders he kept from a trip he took to Japan in 1985. Also included are press clippings, pamphlets, photocopies, and other publications that discuss the historical relationship between New Jersey and Japan.
