Scope and Contents

Papers of several generations of the Van Dyke family which consist primarily of estate documents (wills, letters of administration, accounts, etc.), certificates, photographs, newspaper clippings, and genealogical materials (correspondence, family Bible records and compilations, including charts) on the Van Dyke and Willet(t)s families. Certificates represented include membership and appointment certificates, as well as a certificate (1827) regarding Peter, a black servant of Matthew Van Dyke, and a certificate (1837) indicating Lydia Van Dyke's eligibility for a government pension based on her husband's Revolutionary War service. Two items are undated broadsides: a (ca. 1840s?) "Genealogy of the Willets Family, " and a memorial "Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth Neill..." (printed on wove paper with watermark "T Stains / 1804").

Residents, in earlier generations, of the Mapleto(w)n section of South Brunswick Township (now Plainsboro), Middlesex County, New Jersey; included Jan Van Dyke (d. 1764), his grandson Matthew (1752-1832) and Matthew's spouse Lydia (d. 1843), their son William J. (1795-1865), William's son Henry L.R. (1837-1917), a lawyer of Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey, and Henry's sons James R. (1872-1934) and Hendrick A. (1878-1947).
