Scope and Contents
This series includes information on NAWA membership from the 1950s through the 2000s, and one folder from 1924-1925. There are two main groupings within this series, the membership records and the membership cards. Membership records primarily include accepted applications for membership, which may include artist information and CVs. Applications recieved in the late-1950s through late-1970s were grouped alphabetically, while applications recieved from the late 1970s on were grouped by category within each year. Also found in the membership records are correspondence, member questionnaires, and forms and policies. This grouping also contains Juror Files, which document members who have juried submitted applications to determine which applicants are accepted for membership into NAWA.
There are two types of membership cards within this series. There are the Membership Dues Cards and the Centennial Roster Cards. Membership Dues Cards track membership from the late 1940s through the early 1990s, though it's likely they weren't created and implemented until the 1950s. These cards were used to keep track of the membership status of individual members of NAWA, and documented when dues were paid on an annual basis. Many of the cards indicate the year the member joined, and in some cases, the cards can show when a member passed away or otherwise left the organization.
The Centennial Roster Cards were created in the 1980s as part of the centennial celebrations of the founding of NAWA. The intent of these cards was to have a comprehensive list of all NAWA members from the first century of its existance. It's probable that these cards were used for researching the Centennial Roster that's found in the exhibition catalog for the Centennial Celebration exhibition. These cards usually only contain information such as member name, earliest date the member is associated with NAWA, and broad location of where the member resides.
