Don't forget that the government does not ask you to give anything...You are asked to LEND your money to the government. You receive a Liberty bond for your money. A Liberty bond is Uncle Sam's promise to pay that money back to you and to pay you interest for the use of it. Ask your foreman about the 3rd Liberty loan.
