Scope and Contents

Summary: Chiefly press clippings, with some campaign mailings from successive campaigns. Also includes some letters thanking supporters for contributions, summaries of Hughes’ political accomplishments, results of polls of the electorate and some printed election results. In addition, examples of campaign literature from both political allies and opponents are present.

Also included is a folder marked “Hitler materials” from the 1992 campaign, which documents an incident during the 1992 campaign in which Hughes accused his opponent, Frank A. LoBiondo, of distributing flyers which likened Hughes to Adolph Hitler. Among the material are press clippings and articles documenting the incident and copies of Hughes’ 1992 complaint to the Federal Election Commission, some correspondence received by Hughes from his advisors on the issue and annotated copies of the text of an apparent speech, possibly meant for an advertisement, explaining the issue. Also included is a copy of Hughes’ 1994 letter to the F.E.C. criticizing its lack of attention to his original complaint.

A folder from 1981 contains a photocopy of a handwritten letter from Hughes to Senatorial candidate Edward H. Salmon expressing Hughes’ support, as well as a grateful reply letter from Salmon.
