Scope and Contents

Summary: “Talking notes” and texts of speeches given by Hughes at various occasions and events in his district, statements made on the House floor and testimony given before various committees. Speeches often contain annotations and corrections; also, some speeches are marked as being prepared for Hughes by the Congressional Research Service. Some correspondence with organizations or groups hosting the events at which Hughes was to speak is also included.

Hughes spoke frequently on environmental concerns relating to his district, including ocean dumping, beach erosion and conservation of the Pinelands. He also delivered commencement addresses at elementary schools, high schools and colleges, including Rutgers Law School (May 28, 1993). He also spoke at meetings of organizations in his district, including the Fraternal Order of Masons, the Kiwanis Club and local Chambers of Commerce. Among the Committees before which Hughes gave testimony were the Subcommittee on Energy and Power (January 22, 1975), House Post Office Committee (July 22, 1977), Select Committee on Narcotics Abuse (June 5, 1981) and Rules Committee (June 20, 1990).

Also represented are two instances when Nancy Hughes spoke at events in Atlantic County, New Jersey, in place of her husband: once to the Mainland Masonic Club (July 31, 1975) and once at a luncheon for Caring, Inc. (May 1, 1979).
