Scope and Contents

Summary: Types of documents include sketches, notes, published articles, unpublished manuscripts, and correspondence. The bulk of the series is composed of correspondence relating to grants, art projects, and organizational administration.

This series documents Lerman's professional life as an artist and professor of art. Lerman was very aggressive in seeking funds for her work and research in art. The files of applications for funding and commissioned projects and awards reveal her continuous search for financial support and commissioned work. She successfully received many of the funds and projects for which she applied. The Correspondence folders contain letters regarding slide registries, competition losses, and polite rejections from galleries.

Biographical information and a collection of Lerman's published articles can be found in her Professional Documentation files Lerman compiled these documents as supporting materials for grant applications or for academic promotions or tenure. These files provide a good summary of Lerman's professional life.

There is a large quantity of material on her commissioned project for the school library of P.S. 176 at 4862 Broadway in New York City. These files include correspondence, legal documents, sketches, and photographs from Lerman's application in 1990 to legal document addendums in 1998.

Lerman's published and unpublished writings are located in this series. The files include published articles, drafts, correspondence regarding research and publishing, and photographs for the publication.

There are also files on Lerman's activities in local and national professional organizations. These folders contain her correspondence with other artists, on some of whom Lerman wrote analytical articles or presented at meetings. For example, the folder, "Women's Caucus for Art, National Conference, Presentation on Claire Falkenstein, 1980-1981, undated," contains correspondence from Falkenstein.

Her Suffolk County Community College courses, symposium talks, and panel discussions are also documented in this series. Some of the files on professional organizations contain photographs of their meetings and events. Photographic images of her students' work in her college courses can be found in the series Photographic Materials. Audio tapings of her lectures can be found in Audio Materials.

SCCC stands for Suffolk County Community College, SUNY
