DOCUMENTS RELATED TO THE HISTORY OF THE INTERNATIONAL AND LOCAL UNIONS

Summary: This series consists of documents related to the history and operations of the national and local unions. Included are all documents in the collection other than most photographs, oversized or brittle documents, and clothing. The first five folders contain information related to a 2002 Rutgers University Libraries exhibition, as well as material on that focuses on the international, rather than the local, union. Highlights include two copies of the catalog for the exhibition, Who Built New Brunswick? The History of the International Hod Carriers Union Local 156, and a photocopy of the curator's thesis on the union (A Study of Business Unionism in the Labor Movement and Local 156). This file contains two documents related to union and employee practice: An undated six-page document, Job Referral Rules; and a photocopy of the 19-page booklet, The Union Worker's Bible, edited by E. Ronald Fishman, and published in 1983 by The Almark Company of South Gate, Calif. Materials related to 1996 elections (both LIUNA and the U.S. national elections) are included. These include the LIUNA report, Honest Reform: How the Laborers Are Cleaning Their Own House, and a June 27, 1996, cover letter from LIUNA's General President and General Secretary-Treasurer. A LIUNA Officer Newsletter details the campaigns of Coia and Bruno Caruso for General President. The January-February 1997 issue of The Laborer: The Magazine for LIUNA Members and Their Families, includes articles on Coia's re-election. In 1996 Local 156 members participated in a mailing to union members in New Jersey, urging them to vote in the national elections. This mailing included a New Jersey voter registration application. Two versions of the mailing are included, each one with a cover photo of a Local 156 member on the job.
