Scope and Content Note

Young Israel of Newark, an orthodox congregation, is part of the national Young Israel movement. Records acquired from Young Israel of Newark date from 1926-1981. Records after 1981 were not collected. The documentation is fairly well distributed over the span of years represented, but concentrates on the period between 1940 and 1970.

The MINUTES OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD, including the executive board's committees, record the executive decisions made for the congregation. Some of the committees are Shomer Shabbos, Entertainment, Steering, Youth Council, High Holy Day, Finance, Membership, House, Education and Cemetery.

The records of the congregation include the CONSTITUTION, MINUTES OF THE SYNAGOGUE, MEMBERSHIP DOCUMENTS, FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS, NEWSLETTERS, AD JOURNALS, and CORRESPONDENCE.

The MINUTES OF THE SYNAGOGUE cover the period from 1931 to 1975 with some gaps where no minutes were acquired. These minutes record the meetings of the whole congregation.

The MEMBERSHIP DOCUMENTS cover the period from 1934 to 1969. Applications, membership ledgers and birth and death records are included here. Birth and death records include Yarzeit lists, naming records and memorial plaque orders.

The FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS include ledgers, both account and payroll, and receipt and disbursement books. These records range in date from 1926 to 1977.

The CORRESPONDENCE covers 1937 to 1977. This consists mostly of general correspondence of the synagogue, mailings, Siddurim letters and meeting notices.

The FILES OF RABBI ZEV SEGAL consist of correspondence with various organizations the Rabbi was involved with outside of his office as Rabbi of Young Israel.

The records of the Sisterhood consist of the CONSTITUTION, MEMBERSHIP DOCUMENTS, MINUTES, an AUDIT, NEWSLETTERS, CORRESPONDENCE and a SCRAPBOOK. The MEMBERSHIP DOCUMENTS consist of lists of members.

The records of the Religious School consist of STUDENT APPLICATIONS, an ADMINISTRATIVE FILE, and CORRESPONDENCE. The ADMINISTRATIVE FILE consists of School Board minutes and audits.

For each of the CAMPAIGN MATERIALS, the contents are similar. They consist of campaign brochures, audits, and pledges. Although there were several building campaigns, they were not an ongoing activity. The campaigns were divided by the year of the campaign.

The Hebrew Youth Academy is a Hebrew Day School for kindergarten through 8th grades. Although the Hebrew Youth Academy used the facilities of Young Israel, it is a separate entity and has been treated as such.

The records of the Hebrew Youth Academy are divided into three parts. The records of the HEBREW ACADEMY, and the records of the HEBREW YOUTH INSTITUTE are pre-1962. In 1962 these two schools merged to form the Hebrew Youth Academy. The records of the Hebrew Youth Academy after the merger is the third part.

The HEBREW ACADEMY records consist of Minutes, Financial Documents, and Correspondence.

The HEBREW YOUTH INSTITUTE records consist of Minutes, Student Lists, Financial Documents, Newsletters, and Correspondence. The Financial Documents consist of a budget and an audit.

The Hebrew Youth Academy records include the MERGER, STUDENT RECORDS, including lists, FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS, which consists of a ledger and audits, FACULTY RECORDS, including contracts and lists, MINUTES of various boards, as well as NEWSLETTERS and CORRESPONDENCE.
