Scope and Contents
Lubell 10/6: 162
Gouache (with ink) that depicts people living by and scavenging in a large slag/garbage heap in a scene dominated in the background by industrial buildings and a power plant. There are no faces or identities, making the piece akin to some Soviet art of the time. Like two others, originally in a folder labelled “Washington, DC 1939 (Lubell 161-163), this is a somewhat to very dark and satirical critique of the American economic system at the time. Unlike the other two drawings, this is painted in full color, rather than grays and blacks. Signed W. Milius.
