Scope and Contents
Lubell 10/2: 121
Gouache (with black ink and pastel) reproduction of a stained glass window in the Chartres Cathedral, depicting a man, surrounded by and calling two angels in the sky, men on either side, and dogs at their feet. The art style is deliberately non-naturalistic, evoking older religious art that tried to avoid physical accuracy. Bright colors are the order of the day, possible to similarly evoke the sense of light breaking through the window; most of the "glass" part is deep blue, with red on the internal circular border. Some of the most interesting details relate to the nature of it being a painting, with gold embellishments on the edges of the border. Signed Barbara Stoughton. Graphite pencil writing on lower right reads “Strong Ha … Great.”
