Scope and Contents
Arrangement: Chronologically. Larger items in clamshells and wrappers have been removed from the order and placed in separate housing. Summary: This series is composed of 226 individual items. The various items include: autograph albums, notebooks, diaries, and sketchbooks. Miriam Schapiro kept some form of notebook throughout her adult life. Her notebooks were usually not one identified type, such as a diary. Notebooks often contained to-do lists, diary entries, sketches, artwork inventories, miscellaneous notes, and correspondence to be sent. Each notebook has been given a unique number to identify it and for citation purposes. For example: MSN 001 Miriam Schapiro Notebook number 001 The numbers can be found on the folder/wrapper exterior, and on the inside of the front or back cover of the notebook in the upper corner. Because of the variety of subjects, each item is labelled with various subject terms that describe the contents of the notebook. The terms are not inclusive, but are meant to be a guide. Subjects include, but are not limited to: feminism, women's art, names of individuals, lists, Feminist Art Program, MS Art (Miriam Schapiro's Art), Travel, Recipes, Autobiography, New York, etc. Additionally, researchers interested in MS's writings and notes should also consult the calendars and address books, where she also took various kinds of notes.
