Scope and Contents

Lubell 4/10: 294a-b

Black ink drawing on rough, gray handmade paper, depicting two stylized silhouettes outlined by a black background of varying depth and solidity. The left figure appears to be an extreme caricature of a woman, with breasts appearing on her sides, while the right figure’s head-shape bends backwards in an alien fashion. The two variations on this image are very similar, though 294a uses a much thicker coating of color over a graphite pencil sketch and shades the figures with white chalk. 294b has a much more thinly shaded background and a different representation of both of the hands of the left hand figure. The paper for 294b is thicker, slightly rougher and is light blue gray paper, in contrast to the gray of 294a. On the back of 294b is a paper with the following notation: Humbert River, Cave Painting, Northern Territory, Early Australian aborigine, Date? Ivar Lissner The Living Past.
