Scope and Contents

Lubell 4/9: 278a-c

Three small ink drawings. Sketches of [the village of Delphi in Greece], showing a street scene with someone riding a donkey and a woman carrying a basket or bowl on her head. Lubell 278a has sketches of different design elements, as well as a notation “Delphi – Jan.” Lubell 278b has notations and ink lines on the face and, on the verso, sketches of donkeys and a goat or sheep. Lubell 278c has notes on elements of the composition of the scene. These are one of two sets (see also Lubell 277a-b) of preliminary sketches of village scenes that were then translated into woodblock prints. The ultimate woodblock scene adds in the foreground a woman carrying purchases and a sidewalk table and chairs, as well as expanding on other details. For the woodblock print, see Lubell 280a-f. The possible title was listed in the original information given by the family.
