Scope and Contents
Lubell 3/11: 190
An ink and wash drawing over graphite pencil (with gouache) of an urban landscape, with a train coming through. This piece was one of three in a folder labelled “Drawings Milltown, Newburgh NY, 1940.” While all three have different compositions and colors and use of space, all feature stark spaces filled with buildings and architecture but almost devoid of people. A black train passing through the brown, beige, and white cityscape is a central element to the Lubell 190 and 193. In Lubell 192. the exclusive black and blue palette (as well as being the only place where people can be seen) makes it look like night separating two days.
