ARCHIVAL MATERIAL

Scope and Contents

Summary: This series consists of eight manuscript boxes of archival material, dating from the mid-1930s through 2014. The series includes draft illustrations for Winifred Lubell’s book Metamorphosis of Baubo, research studies for her project on marginalia in medieval books, research on other areas of interest, photocopies of many works from her Depression Era sketchbooks (which are housed in the Smithsonian Institution), videos of the artist discussing her works and an autobiographical sketch. Arrangement is alphabetically by folder title. Material received after the collection was processed are in the last two boxes. Included there are articles about her work, material related to exhibits and talks, slides of her work, notes and sketches for her children's books, Depression Era newspaper clippings that inspired her early art, material donated by James Wechsler relating to the artist, and other papers. A folder of clippings, as well as several issues of workers' newspapers New Masses and Yard News, as well as ART Forum were among these papers. These have been removed and included in the Rutgers University Art Library collection. A selection of the newspaper clippings was photocopied and retained. The originals were discarded.
