Letters Received From Mrs. Henry D. Moeller
Scope and Contents
Summary: The collection contains several letters of correspondence between Hank and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Henry D. Moeller, or Mother Lu as she signs her letters. The earliest letter dates from 1958 and the latest one from 1973. Their correspondence centers around two topics: Hank’s financial support of his mother-in-law and the Moeller family history. Hank helped to pay for the hospital expenses of his father-in-law, Henry D. Moeller, while the latter was hospitalized toward the end of his life and supported his mother-in-law after Henry D. Moeller died around 1961. However, after 1961 the relationship between them seems to have soured (see letter from Mrs. Henry D. Moeller to H. Robert Wilson) although Hank and his wife Edith continued to provide assistance to her. In letters from June 30 and July 2, 1958, Hank’s mother-in-law provides biographical details about Henry D. Moeller and the Moeller family history. In particular, she gives the background story of a rift between the siblings of the Moeller family which dates far back and was related to money matters.
