Scope and Contents
Summary: Documentation of the activities of Sisters in Crime during the vice-presidency and presidency of Linda Grant as kept by Grant. The records pertain to various subjects, including major conventions and conferences, publicity, board meetings and steering committee issues, publications, chapters, Sisters in Crime projects, membership, nonprofit status and special interest groups. Included in the records are correspondence, brochures, news clippings, minutes, agendas, logs, facsimiles, broadsides, speeches, an information packet, pamphlets, newsletters and legal agreements.
Of particular interest is the Calendar of Duties for the President and Vice President, created in order to guide new officials through their service to the organization, which Grant kept in the Activities Log folder along with her own drafts of duties to be completed. This folder also contains an information sheet about the Authors Coalition, which SinC later joined. Also of interest are chapter newsletters, such as Los Angeles' Ransom Notes and Northern California's Stiletta, which are found in both the American Library Association and Chapter folders. Grant also collected a variety of materials that shed light on the role of chapters within the umbrella of the national organization, such as an information packet for new officers of the Los Angeles chapter (that outlines the duties of each officer and provides sample time lines, action plans, minutes and service awards) and a variety of materials under the Chapters heading. In the Backlash folder, Grant collected articles and letters received regarding a disconcertion with the organization and its policies. A keynote speech prepared by Grant for the 1994 California Library Association conference is also included in this series and provides an idea of the types of issues brought forth at such events. Although Grant held the offices of vice-president and president from 1992-1994, this series contains documents that precede these years, including articles, news clippings and SinC seminar information booklets, located in the Biographies and Articles folder, as well as information on the Northern California Chapter. These documents were generated while Grant served as publicity chair. The few documents that postdate her term of office include a letter to a SinC member in Austria regarding improving service to members abroad, and information collected as a committee member for the special interest group Outreach to Authors of Color.
