Scope and Contents

Arranged chronologically.

Documents regarding the scholarships distributed by the Somerset BPW over the course of its existence. This series consists mainly of scholarship applications and their supporting documentation, as well as correspondence between the Somerset BPW, scholarship applicants and recipients, and educational institutions. Scholarships prior to the 1964/65 club year were for one graduating female high school student to receive full tuition in a three-year nursing program at the Somerset Hospital Nursing School. Beginning in 1964/65 the Somerset BPW began giving out smaller scholarships for mature women to attend a school of their choice in order to further their career. Financial need was one of the most important factors used in choosing recipients.

Rosalyn Metzger, who received a scholarship in 1985, maintained contact with the Somerset BPW until the club's dissolution in 1996. Correspondence received from her is distributed throughout this series. Metzger was invited to speak at several meetings since she was considered one of the club's most successful scholarship recipients. She ran her own temporary paralegal business while she was attending school and joined the law firm of Ferrara, Siberine, Rizzo and Bauer as an associate partner in April 1996.
