Scope and Contents

Discussion of the mail contract and public dissatisfaction about the letters with statement that the post office has propagated a false report. Mr. Meigs, Mr. Lynch, Genl. Bailey mentioned and the effect of a law which Meigs managed to have slipped through Congress subjecting all letters sent by steamboats to the same postage as if sent by land, commented upon. Request for securing a sitting of the Chancellor for Mr. Dodge the carver. Report of progress of new boat with date for launching set for 28th inst. Postscript: Respectable house of Archibald Gracie and Sons has failed and no failure in thirty years has excited so much sympathy.
