Dates

  • 1823, February 22

Delay in sending Mr. Wards speech due to R.L. having secured possession of it and not yet returned it. Work on new boat stopped by R.L. President of the Company until a written agreement be secured from Townsend and put in the files at the office R.L. and Walter L. pretend ignorance of boat construction and their attitude &c. is discussed. Approval of an agreement with Hendricks sought. Comment on timber and engine of new boat and progress made to date with request for official written notice to proceed with construction. Letters from Washington indicate that the suit will not come on till the beginning of March and Lynch doubts if it will come on at all. The Post Master is prepared to cancel contract under 6 weeks' notice according to Lynch. This is a trick so that, should the suit be decided against us, Bradby's contract will be in force.
