D. Lynch, Jr. To John Townsend, Albany. New York. ALS., 1822, July 24
Dates
- 1822, July 24
Scope and Contents
Information to effect that, as a result of consultations, recommendation &c. of Mr. Colden, Mr. W. Livingston, Mr. Emmet and yourself, by direction from our president, Mr. Oakley has been engaged as counsel to replace Mr. Pinkney. Discussion of Oakley's conference with Emmet end of the argument or case of the North River Steam Boat Company. Emmet employed by both companies, North River end Fulton, unlike Oakley, will not distinguish between our right to navigate solely within the territory end jurisdiction of this state and the right to navigate between one state end another. Stevens case with ferry company causes great interest and excitement, fear consequences of this question being pushed as he made more impression on our Legislature lest winter than all the rest of our opponents. Shall use best efforts with him to bring about a compromise - fear consequences of a continuance of their dispute as it regards our monopoly.
