X. PARK DISTRICT FILES, 1972-1974, and 1993-1997

Summary: Documents two unsuccessful projects to create a tax district within the bounds of Mohegan Colony Association property in response to difficulties collecting membership fees and maintaining community property and infrastructure. The bulk of this series contains records pertaining to the 1993 to 1998 Park District project. These records include several working drafts of the park district proposal, internal reports, budgets, and correspondence. Additional records include copies of newspaper clippings, petitions, and external reports and related research material.

Of particular interest are records, including minutes, correspondence, and memoranda, generated by a task force composed of supporters and opponents of the park district. These records document the financial instability of the Mohegan Colony Association and the need for increased revenue in order to maintain community property.
