Scope and Contents

Summary: Selected files kept by Robert J. Sullivan, a Lenox employee hired in 1947, who served as district sales manager for New England, Director of Promotion and Public Relations, and later as Vice President of Advertising and Promotion (subsequently termed Advertising and Sales Promotion) for the china division, and later the china and crystal division, of Lenox, Incorporated, as well as serving in the same capacity for Lenox China after its establishment as an operating company under Lenox, Incorporated. The documents, primarily spanning Sullivan's tenure as Vice President of Advertising and Promotion, cover numerous subjects, including advertising campaigns arranged by both product line and publication, advertising rankings as published in the Starch Reports, competitor's advertisements, the retention of and work by consultants and public relations firms (Leber Katz Partners and Ruder, Finn and Rotman), trade shows (in Atlantic City and New York), the sponsorship of exhibitions and museum installations, and U.S. government officials' and White House china (particularly the Reagan White House service), as well as facility issues, including the opening and expansion of the Pomona plant and the opening of the corporate headquarters in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Included in the series are incoming and outgoing letters and memoranda, press and magazine clippings, newsletters, invoices, price quotes, press releases, trade publications, speeches, market research data, and reports and proposals, as well as sheet music for a Leber Katz Partners advertising slide show.

The documents from 1952 to 1956 date from Sullivan's time as Director of Promotion and Public Relations and pertain to the opening and expansion of the production facilities in Pomona, New Jersey.

The documents relating to the White House or its occupants include files on china and crystal gifts given to domestic and foreign statesmen, plates fashioned for the 1984 First Ladies Breakfast, the reproduction of the Wilson service for the Nixon administration, a special service created for former President Jimmy Carter and a private donation of Japanese china to Ronald and Nancy Reagan, in addition to files on the official White House state china service commissioned by the Reagans. Scattered throughout these files are letters from White House and government staffers, such as the White House chief usher, social secretary and employees of the Department of State's Office of Protocol.
