Series I: Writings and Research Materials
Scope and Contents
Summary: Michi Nakao's published and unpublished writings as well as photocopies of the research materials collected by her are contained within this series. The materials chiefly pertain to her writing and research on Sen Katayama. Included are manuscripts as well as published articles from Japan/New York, as well as primary sources on Katayama, writings by him, excerpts, articles, and newspaper clippings about him, as well as related figures and background information. Also included are several examples of Nakao's personal research.
Among the types of documents in this series are photocopies of primary sources on Katayama, which consist of significant records, such as diplomas, family registers, his police record, correspondence with Masatake Iemoto, whose great-grandson currently manages Katayama's correspondence, and with Yoshio Nishimura. Likewise, several other significant documents can be found in his writings, such as photocopies of Heimin, the newspaper in Japanese and English that he published.
In addition, the series contains research materials on individuals, such as Seishichi Iwasaki, Taro Kusakabe, Shusui Kotoku, Kyutaro Abiko, Naoya Shiga, Tomomi Iwakura and Leon Trotsky, as well as background information on Katayama and the history of his times. Half of the series comprises Nakao's writings, most of which is Fuyu no hoko. It was published as a series of articles about Katayama, which she planned to publish as a book with the cooperation of Chikuma Shobo. Not only Fuyu no hoko drafts, but also her drafts of an article on breast cancer, of which she died, can be found in the series.
