Summary: The papers record J.B. Herbert's activities as a U.S. Gauger and document the financial situation of the distilleries he serviced in New Jersey. The records also contain financial information concerning the East Brunswick and New Brunswick Turnpike Company. There are other assorted documents, including: bank books, checks and bank notes, receipts, tax, insurance and account books.

Arrangement: Arranged alphabetically by subject, except for the records concerning his accounts as the U.S. Gauger, which are in alphabetical order by the name of the distillery or the owner of the business. Within the subject, the documents are arranged chronologically. The collection of checks, check stubs and bank notes have been boxed separately but left basically unarranged.
