Scope and Contents

Summary: Photographs documenting aspects of the career and travels of Henry Burfeind. Subjects include Free Ballooning, Lighter-Than-Air, the Middle East, the U.S.S. North Carolina, and Henry Burfeind. Primarily black-and-white photographs, there are also a few postcards.

Free Ballooning ( circa 1939-41) is comprised of photographs of balloons and ballooning at Lakehurst NAS. Lighter-Than-Air (1941, 1943, 1955, and undated) includes photographs of blimps and aerial shots. Middle East ( 1960) contains touristy photographs and postcards as well as photos of navy personnel, Arab rulers, and the U.S.S. Duxbury Bay. There are other miscellaneous photographs including his Annapolis graduation and a squadron of aviators that includes Burfeind.

Photographs can also be found in other series. PLANS FOR INVENTIONS contains photographs of a bomb site (box 5, folder 1 ), a valve to measure ballonet fullness (box 5, folder 4), and a ground handling winch (box 5, folder 5). SCRAPBOOKS also contains many photographs.
