Scope and Contents

Summary: Diary entries of Henry Burfeind dated from May 21, 1943 through November 29, 1943 with occasional gaps during his assignments as Executive Officer of Airship Patrol Squadron 42 in Brazil and from January 5, 1945 through December 25, 1945 with occasional gaps while serving as First Lieutenant on the U.S.S. Mobile in Nagasaki, Japan. Throughout the diary Henry describes his professional experience establishing an administrative command on the base and the difficulty he had getting the officers off their "fanny." He also describes Brazil as looking much like other places in the tropics except for the fact that the towns and houses were in better condition.

The following entry dated October 25, 1943 reveals Henry's frustrations on the base, " ... Lieutenant Wehling knows nothing about airships and whose chief contribution here is sitting in his tent writing letters in Portuguese ... "

While stationed in Nagasaki, Henry describes his duties including the transport of ex-prisoners of war, taking inventory of bunks, inspecting the ship and his involvement in a Court Martial procedure.
