COMPUTER FILES, 1982-2013 with gaps (5 cubic feet)
Scope and Contents
Summary: The computer files consist primarily of system backups that Lautenberg's office created periodically, likely at the end of a session of Congress. The backups are housed on floppy disks, data tapes, and other formats, and were transferred in bulk by a vendor. Very little of the original architecture of the system was retained in the mass transfer, and all file names were replaced with a random series of letters and numbers. With CDs, micro cards, and external hard drives, contents range from photographs, files of video recordings, copies of letters and other paper documents, among other things.
Due to frequent printing within the office, the contents of the computer backups in most cases duplicate items that are also available in paper form somewhere else in the collection--such as the Backups which are likely duplicates of the Staff Files in the Administrative series. Additionally, readable carriers (e.g., CDs and microcards) that house data related to a specific topic, such as constituent mail, are housed in their respective series.
