Scope and Contents

Summary: Documents concerning legal actions or activities involving either Isaac Field, his family members, his businesses, or Fieldsborough. The documents pertain to several subjects, including a) The incorporation of Fieldsborough as a borough, b) Proceedings and actions taken by the government of Fieldsborough, c) Real estate agreements between Isaac Field and others, d) The ownership status of the Mansfield Wharf Company, and e) Other personal legal activities of Isaac Field. Document types include lease agreements and provisions, notices of town meetings and ordinances, orders to appear in court, an act of the New Jersey State Legislature, a notice to the New Jersey State Legislature, a stock subscription list, and some personal statements of legal position.

Among the documents in this series is a copy of Act #132 of the Seventy-Third Legislature of the State of New Jersey, entitled, "An act for erecting the town of Fieldsborough in the county of Burlington into a borough, March 7, 1850", which defined the borough's boundaries and formulated the powers and duties of its governmental offices.

Also of interest is a statement of argument, written by Isaac Field (not dated), in making a claim upon an asset from his brother's estate. This document provides key biographical information on Isaac Field' s whereabouts in the middle part of his life. It also provides insight into the risks of the merchant trade and the difficulty in restoring one's commercial reputation.
