Scope and Contents

Summary: The documents in this series are drafts of manuscripts, typed reports, and the final published versions of the writings of James west. In most cases, West either identified himself as the author or there is some form of printed byline or credit listed. In a few cases, this was not done, but some indication was given to West's authorship.

James West wrote most of these works under his own name. However, he did make a note to the processor of the collection that he also used the following pseudonyms: Steven Mark, John M. Holden, and Arthur Paull.

In dividing up the type written manuscripts, t~e following method was used. Manuscripts which also appear to have published versions in the collection can be found in the folders with the heading "Manuscript drafts." Those manuscripts that do not seem to have published versions present in this collection can be found in the folders labeled "Proposed manuscripts." Some manuscripts do not have any indication as to whether they were even intended for publication, or if they were just written ideas or expressions of west: these are in the folder "Manuscripts of unpublished materials." [Please note: While the processor made every effort to be careful in the classification of these various document types, there was not sufficient time to read all the manuscripts and published articles to see if certain manuscripts that appeared to be unpublished were, in actuality, published in retitled, heavily edited, or rewritten forms. The Researcher should be aware of this and do his own comparative analysis, if necessary.]

West's articles appeared in communist and socialist oriented journals and newspapers. Some were also translated and appeared in foreign language publications. The majority of the English language journal articles were published in Political Affairs and the World Marxist Review. West edited and wrote for The Calumet Call communist newspaper early on, and later a regular opinion column of his appeared in the Peoples Daily World and its successor the Peoples Weekly World. The foreign language articles appeared in a variety of foreign communist party journals and newspapers, including the Russian language papers Pravda and Literaturnaya Gazeta.

The "Books" folders contain books that were not written in their entirety by West, but that have sections that West contributed. Most of these chapters are reprints of his journal articles.

The difference between the "Reports" folder and the "Reports to the Communist Party" folders is the fact that the former are not identified as being reports to the party (although they probably are), and the latter are identified as such.

In the folder labeled "Articles based on West's work ( Spanish) " there are articles written in Spanish by Miguel Urbano Rodrigues. An attached note from the author indicates that the author used some of West's work to write the articles.

The other formats appearing as folder headings should be self descriptive.

It should interviews with topical matters. also be noted that James West typed out several socialist media organizations in which he discussed See the series description for the BIOGRAPHICAL FILE for a note about these topical interviews.
