UNFINISHED WORDLESS NOVEL – INCOMPLETE AND ALTERNATE BLOCKS
Scope and Contents
Summary: This series consists of 21 flat boxes containing the 51 wood blocks that present alternative, draft and incomplete illustrations for the wordless novel that remained unfinished at the artist's death. The effort to bring this novel to life resulted in the printing of Lynd Ward’s Last Unfinished Wordless Novel, using the blocks listed in the previous series. This series consists of the unfinished blocks described at the end of that published work.
Blocks are arranged in the order used to describe the unfinished blocks in Lynd Ward’s Last Unfinished Wordless Novel. The numbering system used in that book was retained, with the addition of an alphabetic character to identify specific blocks in a sequence of similar blocks that were grouped together in the description of the unfinished blocks. A small number of blocks that appear to be related to the unfinished wordless novel, but which were not described in the published work, have been described and inserted where they appear to fit most closely in the sequence. The blocks range in size and degree of completion.
Conforming to the methodology in Lynd Ward’s Last Unfinished Wordless Novel, measurements are in inches, height x width to nearest ¼ inch.
