WHIPPOORWILL PRESS

Scope and Contents

J. Hill Hamon is the proprietor of the Whippoorwill Press in Frankfort, Kentucky. His press name is quite appropriate for this recently retired professor of ornithology. At his private press, Hamon does just about everything in bookmaking: handmade paper, type set by hand, letterpress printing, and hand binding. And he wrote many of his books. Hamon learned to print on a Kelsey 5 x 8 table top hand press in the late 1960s. When he saw an exhibit of miniature books at the University of Kentucky, he decided that this would be his focus… Hamon is a teacher and this extends to his book arts. Robert Baris (Wind & Harlot Press) Linda Donaldson (Gilguy Press) and Daniel von Koschembahr (Square-Rigger Press) are three fine examples of his students. (Bradbury 320)
