TAMAZUNCHALE PRESS

Scope and Contents

Tamazunchale Press is the imprint of Charlotte Smith of Newton, Iowa. Bradbury asserts that the books Smith produces rival those of Achille J. St. Onge for quality. Most of the Tamazunchale Press books were printed letterpress and bound in gilt leather by the oldest printing firm in Europe and the same firm that did so many St. Onge books: Joh. Enschedé en Zonen of Haarlem, Holland. However, Smith eventually had to cease publishing due to the rapid decline of the U.S. dollar in Europe. Smith explains her press name, “When Tom and I drove to Mexico on our honeymoon nearly 58 years ago there were four cities with hotels having modern facilities on the newly opened Pan-Am Highway between Laredo, Texas and Mexico City. One was at Tamazunchale. We were told that this village had been named for two early silver prospectors, Thomas and Charlie. Because this suggested our names I borrowed it for our press names.” (Bradbury 299)
