RICAHRD J. HOFFMAN

Scope and Contents

Richard J. Hoffman was one of the group that Glen Dawson calls the pioneer printers of Southern California. Hoffman was a printing teacher from 1936 to 1978, first at Los Angeles City College and later at California State University, Los Angeles. … Hoffman's private press printing was done after hours while he was employed at the university. When he retired, he printed in a well-equipped shop in his home in Van Nuys, California. … The book entitled Fine Printing in the '80s is not strictly speaking a Hoffman publication. It was published by a group of Los Angeles printing students, the Columbian 415 Chappel, mentored by Hoffman. (Bradbury 97)

The Chappel was formed circa 1980 and seeks to stimulate teachers of printing to maintain individual skills and to pass on to others the lover of letters. (Petko, Fine Printing and the 80s, p 27)
