Non-Calligraphic Work

Scope and Contents

Summary: This series covers a range of Frances Manola’s non-calligraphic interests, but also shows interweaving of elements from calligraphy into her other work, as well as her abiding interest in books and the written word. The series includes booklets she printed in an AIGA workshop in 1954, bookbinding drafts (including gathers and simple stitching examples), notes on repair of Henry Noel Humphreys, Illuminated Books of the Middle Ages and a list of the books she bound, with photographs and samples of materials used. Also present are photographs of her shadow boxes, as well as some box design notes and decorative elements she used in creating shadow boxes, and samples of paper she used in her bookbinding, in her boxes and in her calligraphy. The series is arranged alphabetically by folder name. This material is stored in a manuscript box (Box 7).
