Scope and Contents
Summary:This series, consisting of 2 ¾ cubic feet and dated from 1956 to 2000, contains items that trace and document the development of Suellen Glashausser’s career as an artist. The earliest items included in this group are what appear to be notes from École d’Art Appliqué and her Masters work at University of California at Berkeley. Later materials include “Artist Statements” and “Artist Biographies” for various exhibitions, copies of her CV and resumes, as well as a copy of her portfolio, which includes a CV, slides, photographs, and press relating to her exhibits. Artist statements also may be found in the series ARTWORK - EXHIBITIONS in a number of the Exhibition Materials - Amos Eno Gallery folders, as well as the series ADMINISTRATIVE, in the Grants and Fellowships Applications and Reports folder. General professional correspondence is included in this series. Cards and letters from both personal friends, other artists and acquaintances, can be found in the Correspondence folder within the PERSONAL series. Other correspondence with artists can be found throughout this collection, where they are associated with exhibitions, professional topics, teaching or artistic techniques.
Suellen Glashausser was one of the founding artists of the Amos Eno Gallery in New York City. Documents from the founding of that gallery are included here. For other information on Amos Eno Gallery, see the ARTWORK – EXHIBITIONS series, in the Exhibition Materials – Amos Eno Gallery folders for the years in which she exhibited at the gallery. The series also documents the publication process of the book, Plaiting: Step-by-step (Watson-Guptill Publications, 1976), which she co-authored with Carol Westfall.
Other items include materials that she may have used as reference material in her work as an artist and teacher, such as articles, clippings and workshops. Unbound pages of the Artists' Book Toys/Dolls Book and paper scraps and objects that may have been collected to use in future artists books are also included here. Several notebooks were among her papers. Most have been removed from their original 3-ring binder format and all have been housed in protective wrappers. There are four that are likely from her student years at the University of California at Berkeley. Others are artwork process notes, including ideas, notes and designs.
