ARTWORK – PHOTOGRAPHS

Scope and Contents

Summary:This series is approximately 2 ½ cubic feet, with a date range of 1965 to 2000. It consists of photocopies, prints, slides, as well as proof sheets (contact prints) and negatives of installations and individual works by Suellen Glashausser, including her installation at the 10th Annual Bienniale de la Tapisserie in Lausanne, several installations at the Amos Eno Gallery, large outdoor site specific installations, and artist book exhibitions at Douglass and the State Museum in Trenton. The slides document her artistic movement between small, intricately detailed artist books to large scale sculpture in textile, metals, and woods, and her interrelation of these mediums across scale and form.

The slides were originally in slide boxes, with the artist or subject listed on the outside. As the slides were processed over time by a number of different hands, the original organization and order has been lost. However, where possible, notes have been made and inserted with the slide sheets, that indicate the original box and contents. Many slides also were used for teaching slide shows and have handwritten numbers indicating in what order the slides were to be presented. An effort has been made to keep many of these slide shows in the original order on the slide sheets, as well as to preserve the original order in which the photographs were taken.

Folders of black and white Proof Sheets (contact prints) and Negatives are largely undated. The images record the artist and her work, including artists’ books, plastic bag pieces, textile sculpture, and installations, as well as some personal photos of the artist and her family. Family images are on proof sheets in this series and in the PERSONAL series.

Some photographs were mounted on acidic board, which was treated on the back with Bookkeeper to retard deterioration of the backing board.

The series is arranged chronologically, then alphabetical by title. The date used is that of the year the work was created, or of the first images, even if that work also may have been exhibited and photographed at a later date. All images of the same work are located together under the year of original creation. Undated and unidentified prints and undated proof sheets and negatives are located at the end of the series. Untitled groupings of one technique, such as Painting or Weaving are in one folder, filed with the earliest date.

Medium and dimensions noted when available.

Other images of many of Suellen Glashausser’s works can be found in the series PROFESSIONAL, which includes portfolios of her work assembled for exhibitions, grant applications and other purposes. Portfolio, Folders 1 and 2 in that series include slides and other images representative of her work from 1978-2000. Portfolio – Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation Grant includes slides of several of her artist books from 1998 and 1999.
