Scope and Contents

The American Tract Society published religious texts and inspirational writings starting in the early 1800s. From the 1857 Constitution of the American Tract Society (cited in A Brief History of the American Tract Society, Boston: Press or T.R. Martin, 1857), a society was formed: “the object of which shall be to promote the interests of vital godliness and good morals, by the distribution of such Books and Tracts as may be calculated to receive the approbation of Christians of all denominations usually termed evangelical.” (Michigan State Libraries website, Digital Sources Center)
