Scope and Contents

Summary: This record group contains the financial statements and other documents of five companies affiliated with Kings, and three other related companies, such as those owned by Allen Bildner's sons, Robert and James Bildner.

The files of Discount Dollar Drug contain financial statements for 1960 and 1961. The Kings of the Oranges files consist of financial statements for the years 1956 to 1964. There also are financial reports (1947) for Kings Meats, Inc. The records of the Mojoda Holding Company are comprised of agreements between family members, including a stock purchase and assignment agreement (1950) and a stockholders agreement (1968), a memo concerning the valuation of stock (1976), and financial statements and reports (1956-1986).

J. Bildner & Sons was a specialty foods store owned and operated by James Bildner. The first store was opened in Boston in 1984, and these folders document its initial growth, its expansion into markets in Atlanta, Chicago and New York, and its bankruptcy in 1988. Eight years later, the final location of J. Bildner & Sons, at Coolidge Corner in Brookline, MA, closed in 1995. The files contain advertising, press coverage, plans for fixtures, a private placement memorandum, a prospectus for common stock, and invitations to the new store openings (1984-1988). There also is a report prepared by Howard L. Green and Assoc. concerning consumer surveys conducted in Brookline and Belmont, MA (July 24, 1992).

RLB Food Distributors is owned by Robert Bildner. Formed in 1985, RLB Food Distributors celebrated its 20th Anniversary in 2005. The files contain a methods and procedural study for improvement of the RLB Distribution Center in West Caldwell, including an analysis of improvements for the receiving areas of Kings Super Markets (1988), and a consultant's report of the schedule of events for the expansion of the warehouse and distribution center (1989). The other files hold a booklet celebrating the grand opening of the RLB Perishable Food Distribution Center (1990) and memos regarding coordinating procurement and distribution with Kings (1990). The records of the SME Distributing Company, Inc. contain a report on financial statements for 1985 and 1986, and a cash flow summary for 1988. The files for Super Market Equipment Company include yearly financial statements (1952-1982) and partnership agreements (1953, 1971) and closing documents concerning the purchase of Phyllis Schechter's shares of SME stock (1979).

Another of James Bildner's Companies, Windward Group Companies, Inc. is represented by a bound volume of plans and legal documents for the expansion of several stores in the Massachusetts area (1983-1984).
