Scope and Contents

Summary: This record group is comprised of studies and reports commissioned by Kings in the areas of market research, consumer surveys, progress of individual stores, compensation, future store site research, and growth. In 1970, for example, Kings hired Ballinger-Meserole Company, a management consulting firm, to create a scheduling system for their stores, which included scheduling plans for the checkout, grocery, meat, dairy and deli departments. A 1973 study of meat-buying consumers found out what women really wanted in the meat department at Kings.

There are also studies for specific stores and departments, such as the meat department in the Livingston store (1973) and "What's Happening at Kings Morristown" (1974). Kings' five year growth was studied (1979), as were salary ranges (1980-1984). Kings' shoppers were polled for their opinions and the results were compiled into research reports (1985-1993). Demographics reports and site surveys helped Kings management analyze growth opportunities and decide where to build new stores (1989-1994). There is also a summary of interviews and questionnaires concerning Kings Super Markets prepared by Cook Ross, Inc. which provides insights into employees views of Kings leadership and "what made Kings different" (1995).
