Scope and Contents
Summary: Varied documentation of Byrne's personal affairs and his personal collections regarding politics in New Jersey. Numerous documents pertain directly to Byrne, including partial documentation on his studies at Harvard Law School, his service in the Air Force, his position as Chairman of the Board of Intercontinental Life Insurance, his position as Public Utility Commissioner, and his position as lecturer in a political workshop at Princeton University, as well as miscellaneous personal financial and insurance documents, and parodies of Byrne. Other documents, collected by Byrne, refer to various topics, such as local and state government in New Jersey, the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, the local government of Cambridge Massachusetts, and the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. Included in this series are annual reports, admission tickets and badges, biographical pieces, campaign literature, case studies, class notes, letters and memoranda, membership lists and booklets, military orders, oral histories, panel discussion transcripts, postcards and memorabilia, rosters and staff listings, and parodies.
Among the documents in this series are drafts and printed copies of Byrne's published writings, including the anecdotal piece "A Governor's Diary," which ran in the Star-Ledger in May of 2001.
Included in the series are several retrospective items focusing on Byrne's terms as governor. Included among these documents are the transcripts of two panel discussions, one on the Pinelands Preservation Act, and one an overview of thirty years of the governorship in New Jersey, as well as the transcript of an oral history interview.
The admission tickets pertain to the 1964 Democratic National Convention (Atlantic City), the Visit of the Vice President to the Papal Inaugural Ceremony in 1978, the Statue of Liberty Centennial Celebration in 1986 and the New York Giants Super Bowl XXI Celebration in 1987. The name badges pertain to the 1958 National Governors' Conference in Florida, the New Jersey Investment Mission of 1981, the 2000 Democratic National Convention and a Rutgers University Libraries' Donor Recognition Event in 2006.
