ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS, 1934-1983

Summary: Created by the Resettlement Administration of the United States and the Borough of Roosevelt, and, by architects, engineers, and land surveyors, including Alfred Kastner, Marshall A. Congleton, and Myron X. Feld, employed by the federal government or by the borough.

Types of documents include blueprints, copies, sketches and related charts that document the planning of Jersey Homesteads and the growth of Roosevelt Borough. Over 50 per cent of the material consists of borough plans, plans of the garment factory, houses, and utilities.

Of particular interest are copies of three elevation plans (1934) for a house, factory, and school/community house, created by an unknown artist for the New Jersey Civil Works Administration, a state body set up under the federal Emergency Relief Act, which preceded the National Industrial Recovery Act. Also of interest are the plans for the original garment factory (1935-1937), and plans for one proposed in 1948, which include doors, the electrical layout, elevations, the foundation, plumbing, the roof, stairs, and windows.

Borough plans encompass both drawings of the overall layout of Jersey Homesteads and specific illustrations, such as building plans and schedules, road paving, the water system, and zoning. Borough Plans also include a large number of sketches showing the Utilities as laid on a week-byweek basis, from December, 1935, through July, 1936, (with gaps).

House plans include construction profiles, floor plans, foundations, grading plans, lot layouts, preliminary plats, progress charts, subdivisions, surveys, and 1946 charts showing the residents' acreage, insurance, and taxes.
