ENGINEER/MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR'S FILES, 1935-1945; 1976

Dates

  • 1935-1945; 1976

Scope and Contents

Summary: Includes general correspondence, memoranda, reports, notes, contracts and specifications concerning the Borough's buildings, roads, and sewage and water treatment systems. Also includes a grant proposal (1976) to upgrade the water treatment plant, two small blueprints and a file book (1937) indexing blueprints used in the construction of Jersey Homesteads. Stored separately are the Borough Engineer's copy of the general specifications for dwellings in Jersey Homesteads (Alfred Kastner, 1936) and a log book of readings from the water pumping and sewage treatment plants (1937-1939).

The correspondence (1937-1940) documents early attempts to deal with polluted water by borough engineer Oscar Nisnevitz, who was killed during the Second World War. The engineer's reports include a study of the strength of the concrete roof slabs (1936) which were produced by the slab factory in Jersey Homesteads, and originally had been meant to serve as walls.
