Summary: Documentation of activities relating to the Ad Hoc Monitoring Group which Congressman Maguire and others (Tom Downey and Peter Knight) formed in September, 1977 in response to the death in police custody of Black Consciousness leader Steve Biko. Included are memoranda, correspondence (including a "Dear Colleague" letter soliciting membership in the Group), notes, lists of cosponsors of legislation, newsclippings, conference materials, speeches, and a phonorecord by a Crossroads (squatter camp) singing group with a personal inscription inside the jacket. Also included are materials on the Congressman's trip to South Africa in July of 1978 during which he presented the "Stevie Wonder Humanitarian Award" to the family of Steve Biko.
