ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT'S FILE, 1980-1981

Dates

  • 1980-1981

Scope and Contents

Summary: Documentation of, usually, New Jersey projects, although position papers and (federal) legislative materials are included. Topics include the Mahwah Ford plant (heavily represented), Women, Small Businesses, Veterans, the purchase of buses ("Transbus") séniorcitizens and the 1980 campaign against Marge Roukema (involving defense issues). Documents types include memoranda, reports, newsclippings, correspondence, speeches and bills.

A significant document in this series is the "Annotated Chronology of the Policy Commitments of Rep. Andrew Maguire" compiled by unidentified staff members and found in the initial folder of the series.

It is apparent that the position of Administrative Assistant, held in Wash. by Robert Kerr from as early as 1974, was assumed by Kathleen Rae (formerly Political Representative involved in Intergovernmental/Grants at the district office in Paramus, New Jersey) in or around July, 1980. Hence the ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT'S FILE reflects activities of both these staff members. It has been impossible to determine whether Robert Kerr stayed on in some other capacity beyond July, 1980 –"Maguire Wire" newsletters indicate only that he joined a Congressional Oversight Committee as staff director sometime in 1981, by which time Ms. Rae as well as the rest of the staff had also found other jobs (due to the Congressman's electoral loss in November, 1980). For fuller information on staff persons, positions and periods of tenure, see both the "Maguire Wire"s in CONSTITUENT NEWSLETTERS, and the "Administrative Who's Who" preceding these series descriptions.

Persons involved with these files, listed by degree of representation in them, include Kathleen Rae (new Administrative Assistant), Robert Kerr (former Administrative Assistant), Marge Starr (district office intergovernmental/grants person), Gladys Herschel (Special Assistant, Washington) and Cheryl Canova (Receptionist, Washington).

Some of the unarranged materials at the end of this series may date as early as 1976, but the bulk of them are clearly dated 1980 or 1981.
