PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE, 1977-1982

Dates

  • 1977-1982

Scope and Contents

Summary: Correspondence relating to the Congressman's career in office (letters of thanks, support or consolation) plus various issue-related mail such as apparently had no significance in the SUBJECT FILES. Of significance is a folder of letters to and from President Carter, plus three sequences of Christmas cards sent to the Congressman after his 1980 and 1982 electoral losses, many of which express continuing support.

The alphabetical files (1977) were apparently kept by Office Manager Connie Davis, and folders R through Z are missing. Subsequent folders, possibly kept by her successor, Connie Schmidt, were labeled in processing and contain later letters (1978-1979) of a similar personal nature.

The three sequences following are Christmas cards distinguished by which of the Congressman's addresses they were sent to (district office, Washington office and New Jersey home respectively). Two folders in this series appear to be incongruous: one following the "Carter, Jimmy" folder and labeled "Special" (containing 1979 letters, as opposed to the 1977 letters in surrounding folders) and the other entitled "Biographical Material", following the 1978-1979 folders, which is incomplete with respect to his activities since 1977 (see Biographical Chronology earlier in this finding aid for a more complete biography).

More correspondence, mainly white copies of letters sent by the Congressman to 1980 campaign supporters, can be found in the miscellany following SUBJECT FILES. ROBO LETTERS may also be consulted for outgoing letters relating to particular issues.
